ART: A Closer Look at Cheyne Gallarde’s Comic Book-Inspired Portraits of Drag Queens and Queer Icons.
Adding a queer twist to vintage comic book covers, Cheyne Gallarde’s take on pop art is subversive and eye-catching.
According to his agency, “As a child, [Cheyne’s] drawing inspirations were Saturday morning cartoons like He-Man and Thundercats. As a self-taught artist, his life changed after he picked up a copy of Stan Lee’s “How to Draw the Marvel Way”. To this day, his main inspiration continues to be the king of comics Jack Kirby and modern illustrators like Dave Gibbons and Joe Quinones.
Unsurprisingly, a large portion of this multi-award winning artist’s work comprises drag queens and other queer icons reimagined as comic book superheroes.
