PHOTOGRAPHY: The Latest Instalment of Dani Coyle’s “Inter_face” Series Captures the Diversity of Intersex People.
Intersex artist and photographer Dani Coyle’s mission with the latest chapter in their ongoing Inter_face series is clear: to reframe stereotypical understandings and perceptions of intersex people.
“I really want it to show the diversity [of intersex people], because I feel like a lot of the time queer people and intersex people are really shown old stereotypes. People think of hermaphrodites and both sets of genitalia and all of these mythical creatures and that they are really weird. I wanted to show that we’re actually a group of normal people and we’re all so different that you can’t really attach a stereotype onto us because there’s just so much variety,” says Coyle in an interview with Sleek.
Coyle, who is also doing their Masters in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Oxford University, also wanted to focus of the series to steer away from anatomy; for them, they are “simple, striking portraits of people they have encountered, livelihoods and stories that prevail over the constricting definition of gender and bodies” as Douglas Greenwood writes for i-D.
