ART: Say Hello to José Rojas, the Mexican Artist Who Combines Fine Art, Pop Culture and Queerness.

The bold and unique world of José Rojas contains “snapshots of many queer fantasies—from vanilla to kinky”, as the artist describes on his official site.

In addition to work of  film and fashion icons, like Pedro Almodovar, Wes Andersson, Tim Burton, Nadia Lee Cohen and Tim Walker, Rojas is also inspired by pop culture, and cartoons from his childhood.

“The shows and cartoons I watched as a kid, as well as the depiction of pop culture in the media are a great inspiration, too. Especially queer icons, bold colours and lots of hairspray and drama. Humour is a key ingredient in my creative work. I believe that adding irony and quirkiness to my illustrations helps them feel more real, relatable, and accessible,” says the artist in an interview with KALTBLUT.

“Last, but not least, I put a lot of myself in my work as a way of portraying my various inner personalities in each illustration, resulting in pseudo self-portraits quite often.”
