FASHION: MMRMS Studio Launches a Collection that Queers Caribbean Nightlife Culture.

For his emerging label’s latest collection, London-based designer Tommy Harvey turned to his Caribbean heritage for inspiration. With specific reference to dancehall music, the collection features bold colours and swooping cut outs.

“It's a testament to the queer Caribbean scene that's long been underground in London, but has really come to the forefront recently,” says the designer in an interview with i-D. “We're seeing loads of new queer artists from African and Caribbean backgrounds, and I think it was just about really honing in on the exciting emergence of this new style and sound that's been popping up recently”.

Harvey’s label was born out of an act of rebellion: in 2018, after not making the cut for the London College of Fashion graduate show, he participated in Burn the Man, a pop- up fashion show held in a warehouse in East London on the same night as the grad presentation.

Since then, MMRMS Studio has gone from strength to strength, and has made quite the impact on the fashion scene.

“MMRMS Studio is synonymous for its dangerously low cuts, exposed shoulders and red-hot silhouettes. This unapologetic confidence and subtle queering of hyper-masculine codes evolved with Harvey’s own journey to self-discovery – growing up conflicted by both his queerness and his Jamaican heritage.” - 10Magazine.com
