PHOTOGRAPHY: Paging Through Ron Amato’s “Grass” Series [NSFW].
Photographer Ron Amato has been conceptualising images since his childhood. The Brooklyn-based artist drew inspiration from fashion and portrait photographers, including Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe and Francesco Scavullo.
After navigating through the 1990s and early 2000s as a fitness photographer, he exhibited his seminal show of sexual self-portraits at Richard Anderson Fine Arts in NYC in 2000.
His later work focused on everything from ageing and diversity in the gay community to idealised body manipulation and intimacy between gay men.
His newest work, “Grass”, explores the synergy of the human figure and surrounding landscapes.
"I photograph a lot of reclining figures for this work. A common direction I give models is to imagine they were dropped there unconscious and weightless. I try to get them to remove tension from muscles and to give into the ground, if you will. I want the body to melt into the ground, to become one with the earth," says Amato.
